Ira's San Juan River Trip from San Carlos to El Castillo, Nicaragua.

This was Ira Stephenson's river trip to El Castillo, 3 1/2 hour trip, one way, on the slower boat. There is a faster boat that takes only two hours. The slow boat is better because you will see much more. Here you will see pictures of river people who live along the San Juan River. 

The River is Their Only Source

Most residents get all their supplies delivered by other river boats. There were no visible roads. Many houses just had fishing boats and did not seem to have supply boats; but boats just for fishing. Several times Ira would see horses tied up on the shore where there was no boat dock. Delivery boats would get close enough for people to hop in and their needs quickly moved ashore. The horses were their means of transportation back and forth in the jungle where they lived out of sight of the river.
