Meet Volunteers Ruth Meding and Lea Dickopf
We are two German students who came to Nicaragua to do a volunteership with the Mujeres Ambientalistas in Esteli for a month. It was great fun. We helped tending the fields where they grow vegetables and herbs, they showed us the paper making process and we even got to make cards, posters and other things with them. They only use recycled paper and natural colors such as vegetables, fruits, flowers or tobacco. We went to the markets with them where we sold their paper products (todo hecho a mano!) It was a very interesting work where we got to spend a lot of time with the women and they told us so much about their association, about the foundation and the trouble of constantly having helpers (they all do it voluntarily) and buyers. As well as that it was a great way of getting to know the people and the country.
We can only recommend coming to visit them to see their products or even volunteer for a while. They are really happy about every helping hand.

A skinny horse in the city

This is a common sight here in Estelí.

High-spirited horse blocks a truck full of horses.

On Sunday there was a horse show there were several truck loads of horses brought in from the farms. It looks like this horse didn't want to go along for the ride.

The owner of this horse stopped to get some goodies to eat at the show down the road.

It's Mother's Day in the USA today. Yorleni created some new greeting card designs for El Día de la Madre which is on the 30th of May in Nicaragua, a Monday. It's an interesting coincidence that it falls on Memorial Day in the United States giving you an excellent opportunity to remember your mother on both days.

Yorleni designed these cards from her heart's love for her own mother and the mother's that she knows and loves in her own barrio, Boris Vega.

10 Years of Rainy Seasons Have Taken its Toll
It's time rebuild what the ravages of tropical weather continue to destroy over the years. We are repairing and rebuilding all of the old structures hopefully in time for this year's rainy season.
Both yesterday and today we heard the ominous rumblings of distant thunder in the south and in the west. Managua, 50 miles to our west, had a hail storm yesterday afternoon. This is very uncommon at any time of the year. We hope the concrete sets up before the downpour.

It's Semana Santa (Holy Week) here in Estelí, Nicaragua, Central America. Thursday and Friday almost every business was closed and the steel shutters were down and padlocked and the streets were nearly empty. The many buses and taxis that normally fill the streets were missing. The Roman Catholic influence is pervasive and all encompassing. Thousands of worshippers walked slowly and somberly, protected from the sun by their umbrellas, behind the procession of priests carrying a statue representing Jesus down the empty streets from the Church of Calvary to the Cathedral in front of the central park 12 blocks away. Many people go to mass every afternoon and have prayer vigils in their homes. Such a reverence for Jesus I have never seen in the US.

Happy Resurrection Day

Terrace Construction

We are adding a concrete terrace for
visitors to use for photo opportunties
with their travelling groups this summer.
It will be perfect to stand on with our
colorful mural in the background.
Now they won't have to stand in mud
during the rainy season.
